Buying live Dungeness crab for sale from FARM-2-MARKET is only the first step to enjoying this delicious seafood. Knowing how to properly cook and how to get the best taste is vital. And while cooking live Dungeness crab might sound complicated, we can assure it isn’t (plus it will taste amazing!).
Here is how you can prepare a delicious seafood meal right from the comfort of your own home.
- What You’ll Need
Now, that you are all set to cook, there are some particular preparations you need to be aware of. Most of us will have to cook our crab on the day it is delivered since we don’t have one of those fancy tanks you see at restaurants with all the crabs or lobsters swimming around in them. So, you guessed it, you’re going to boil your own crab! Be sure you have a pot that is large enough, and then add water. Placing your crab in your freezer for about half can sedate them, so you can try this before you cook them.
- Cooking Instructions
Once it is boiling, add ½ cup of salt for every gallon of water that you use. Put in the crab and proceed to cover the pot. Now, how long you let the crab boil will come down to how big or how much you are cooking (normally cook time 17 mins).
After this, you can remove your crab and you are all set.
Using your thumb, take off the apron and remove it from the back of the crab shell. Now remove the carapace by inserting your thumb where the apron was and raising it until it comes off (along with guts from the crab). You will also need to remove the gills and the mandibles before you rinse your crab clean.
- Storing the Leftovers
Now, if you don’t plan on eating all of the Dungeness crab you have just prepared you will need to either store it in a refrigerator or freeze it in the shell.
When frozen at a temperature of roughly -10°F, your crab meat can last up to four months. If you store it in the fridge, it should last anywhere between 3 or 4 days. If you notice an odd smell from storing it in the fridge, it is best to throw it away. Whichever option you choose, when safely stored, you can enjoy your crab for many meals.
